Basketry and Cordage
(Old Songhees Reserve, Victoria, B.C.)
The artifact illustrated here is cordage attached to basketry. Artifacts of this nature are a rarity on the Northwest coast, occurring only at sites with enhanced preservative qualities (i.e. water-logged deposits). The cordage is two strand Z lay twisted which was commonly found ethnographically amongst Salish groups from the Gulf of Georgia region and would have 
served a variety of uses including lashing, towing and snaring. The basketry to which the cordage is affixed is fine-
weave checker plaited.
