Our Offices

In Victoria, we own a warehouse/office facility with over 2,000 square feet of working space including laboratory facilities, in-house library and offices. This location is ideal for conducting background or documentary research when we must access materials located at the B.C. Archaeology Branch, the Royal British Columbia Museum (RBCM), the British Columbia Archives and Records Services and the Surveyor General Branch. We are located near to the University of Victoria, with access to laboratories, comparative collections and the services of Pacific Identifications Inc.

Our Burnaby office offers a full range of archaeological services and provides convenient access to the lower mainland and interior regions of the province. Located near Simon Fraser University, the Burnaby office facilitates the continuing expansion and enrichment of our assessment teams with academically qualified professionals and disciplinary specialists.

I.R. Wilson Consultants Ltd., now Stantec, is supported by additional offices in Sidney, Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Abbotsford, Kamloops and Kelowna.

We have a complete inventory of standard archaeological survey and excavation equipment that meet or exceed safety standards. Our laboratory facilities boast an array of specialized analytical tools while our production department provides professional documentation services and extensive digital mapping capabilities (e.g., CAD and ArcView GIS software).

Feature Artifact

Basketry
(Old Songhees Reserve, Victoria, B.C.)

The artifact illustrated here displays preserved basketry. Artifacts of this nature are a rarity on the Northwest coast, occurring only at sites with enhanced preservative qualities (i.e. water-logged deposits). The type of weaving present on this fragment is referred to as open plain twining. The open weave of this type of basketry would have allowed for good ventilation enabling its use for gathering and carrying seafood. Basketry of this type is characteristic of Coast Salish groups and was one of the
most common types of basketry in the Coast Salish area 2,000
years ago.
