Feature Artifact

Fish Pendant
(Poets Cove, Pender Island, B.C.)

The artifact illustrated is an intricately ground sandstone fish sculpture, likely representing a salmon. The representation is simple and idealized but generally naturalistic, lacking the design motifs and stylized forms typically associated with the region’s ethnographic artistic tradition. Fish effigies such as this have also been recovered from archaeological assemblages on the Central Coast (Carlson 1984) and the Lower Fraser region (Borden 1984) and, along with seated human figure bowls, are strongly associated with the
Marpole Phase (ca. 2000
to 1100).
